Chadderton | About the Area

The town of Chadderton is situated in the Metropolitan borough of Oldham. Located at the foothills of the Pennies and on the banks of the River Irk, Chadderton has a population of just over 33,000.

Historically, Chadderton dates back to the Middle Ages, where it was home to two mansions, Chadderton Hall and Foxdenton Hall and its own line of lords. Chadderton developed from a manorial township to industrial textile manufacturing town during the Industrial revolution and that the end of the Victorian era.

Chadderton became well known for its cotton mills and its production lines for cotton spinning. By the middle of the 20th Century, there was a massive decline in demand but Chadderton continued to grow due to continual suburbanisation and urban regeneration.

Its industrial past can still be seen today as some of its surviving red brick cotton mills are now used as industrial warehouses or distribution centres. Some of these buildings are listed, due to their unique architecture and historical background.

Chadderton is also home to Chadderton Hall Park, which is a public park, located next to the River Irk and owned by Oldham Council. This was where Chadderton Hall used to stand before it was demolished in 1939. It was given the Green Flag Status during 2006.
