Failsworth | About the Area

The town of Failsworth lies in the metropolitan borough of Oldham in Greater Manchester. It developed around the north bank of the River Medlock and is close to the Rochdale Canal. With a population over 20,000, the first signs of the town existence dates back to 1212.

Until the 19th Century, Failsworth was known as a small agricultural township, which held local markets and focused on farming. When the Industrial Revolution occurred, Failsworth, like the rest of the borough, transformed to a cotton mill specialist, with several mills constructed with the town’s boundaries.

Another famous landmark in Failsworth is the Failsworth Pole. The May Pole, and first Political Pole, was erected in 1793. The pole has since become an iconic symbol of the town and is widely respected by residents. Its surrounding areas such as the gardens and square in which it stands were regenerated as part of the millennium celebrations in 2006.

Daisy Nook Country Park is another place worth visiting in Failsworth. Close to the River Medlock and the Rochdale Canal, it’s a great place to take a walk and admire the surrounding beauty of Failsworth.

Failsworth is close to commuting links such as the M60, which circles Greater Manchester and Failsworth Railway Station, which is located on Hardmen Lane, allowing easy access to nearby cities of Manchester and Leeds. 

Transport links
The main road that runs thorough Failsworth is the Oldham Road otherwise known as the A62, which links to Manchester and Oldham. Failsworth is also close to the M60, which circles Greater Manchester and can be accessed at Junction 22.

Rail
The railway station based at Failsworth is located along Hardman Lane and is part of the Oldham Loop Line. The un-manned station serves Manchester Victoria and Rochdale via Oldham and is managed by Northern Rail.

Bus
Although there is not a bus station situated in Failsworth, there are frequent buses running to Oldham and Manchester with First Manchester. Other destinations include Ashton-under-Lyne, Chadderton, Huddersfield, Rochdale, Royton, Saddleworth, Shaw and Crompton.
