Uppermill | About the Area

Uppermill is the largest village in the Saddleworth area in the metropolitan borough of Oldham and has a population just over 9000. The village is located in the one of the picturesque valleys of the Pennine Hills by the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

Uppermill dates back to the Roman times but it wasn’t until the industrial revolution, that the village began to make a name for itself. Several mills were constructed and production specialised in wool and cotton spinning.

Now Uppermill is a popular destination due to its growing number of craft shops and restaurants and cafes, catering the growing tourism market. Uppermill also offers a local farmers market, traditional services such as a butcher, greengrocer and bakers and amenities such as a bank, post office and chemist.

An Uppermill property that is worth visiting is the Saddleworth Museum. The museum focuses on the history of the area dating back to the roman times and is also home to a regularly updated art gallery. Ladcastle and Den Quarries are two particularly interesting sites in Uppermill due to their scientific interest in the geological field and have been used to gain a better understanding about the Carboniferous Period.

Uppermill is also home to Brownhill Countryside Centre, which offers the chance for visitors to interact with local wildlife and learn more about their natural habitat. Uppermill football club are also based in the village and were the first local club to achieve the prestigious Football Association award ‘Charter Standard Community Award’.
